Day 2 for the Cabot Trail explorer
Exploring the Western Side — From the Highlands to Chéticamp
Staying with us at the Chanterelle Restaurant & Inn means you are perfectly positioned to experience the Cabot Trail at a relaxed and enjoyable pace. The second half of the trail offers a very different feel from the eastern side—more open landscapes, dramatic ocean views, and a strong Acadian influence.
Start your day by heading back onto the Cabot Trail toward Pleasant Bay. This stretch of road is often quieter, especially in the morning, and offers frequent pull-offs where you can stop to take in sweeping views over the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Wildlife sightings are common here, particularly moose in the early morning or late afternoon, so take your time and enjoy the drive.
One of the highlights of the western side is the Skyline Trail. If you only choose one hike on the Cabot Trail, this is the one we most often recommend to our guests. Please note that as of this year, access to the Skyline Trail is by reservation only and must be booked in advance through the Parks Canada website. The trail itself is wide and well maintained, making it accessible for most visitors, and the reward at the end is spectacular. On a clear day, the boardwalk lookout appears to float above the ocean far below, and sunsets here are truly unforgettable. Be sure to allow plenty of time—this is a place worth lingering.
Continuing along the trail, you’ll pass through areas such as Cap Rouge and Belle Cote, where the road hugs the coastline and the landscape opens up. This section showcases some of the most iconic scenery on the Cabot Trail, with rugged cliffs dropping into calm, expansive water.
Before reaching Chéticamp, a short stop at MacIntosh Brook Falls is well worth it. The walk is easy and provides a refreshing break from driving, especially on warmer days.
Chéticamp itself is a welcoming Acadian fishing village and a wonderful place to spend a few hours. It’s ideal for lunch, browsing local shops, or strolling along the waterfront. Those interested in local culture may enjoy visiting Les Trois Pignons Museum, which highlights Acadian history and traditional rug hooking.
After exploring Chéticamp, you can begin your return drive toward the inn, stopping at viewpoints or shops you noted earlier. The scenery feels entirely different in reverse, often revealing details you missed the first time.
By spreading the Cabot Trail over two days, you’ll avoid the rush and truly experience what makes this drive so special.
